The main objective of the Action is to increase our knowledge required for preventing and mitigating potential flood impacts to urban areas by exchanging experiences, developing integrated approaches, and by promoting the diffusion of best practices in Urban Flood Management.

Secondary objectives are:
  • gather and share information on the subject across Europe with respect to theory, methods, and practical experiences;
  • process and present the information in a form that others can learn from it,
  • nitiate R&D projects for the EU’s 7th Framework programme,
  • stimulate national R&D initiatives,
  • increase awareness of the importance of UFM in general;
  • secure good dissemination of results using seminars, proceedings and papers in journals and a website.
 
This action is based on a multi- and interdisciplinary approach and will bring together scientists involved in water management, hydrology, urban planning and design, civil engineering, social sciences, construction engineering, ecology, etc. This action will mostly include applied and pragmatic research methodologies. 
The following four working groups are suggested:

WG 1 Flood probability assessment

  • WG-leader: Erik Pasche
  • Models and tools to assess flood probability and measures to decrease probability

WG 2 Flood impact assessment
  • WG-leader: Andreas Vassilopoulos
  • Models and tools to assess impact of flooding and measures to decrease vulnerability

 

WG 3 After flood rehabilitation

  • WG-leader: Stephen Garvin
  • Flood recovery measures (technical) and methods of damage compensation

WG 4 Non-technical aspects
  • WG-leader: Richard Ashley
  • Towards integrated approaches to increase resilience and robustness (for the prevention and mitigation of flood risk in urban areas).
